@Ruey
Congratulation, your visa approved ! You are step nearer to your dream, ha ha. I understand your feeling when got visa approved,its kinda of lost…
From my experiences, winter is harder to find job compare with summer, and north island is more job opportunity compare with south island. the most famous is pruning in the vineyard, besides that, kiwi repacking, lily flower bulbs packing etc. They are also limited vacancy for ski field worker, hotel cleaning job. My suggestion for winter is don’t find job last minute, unless you are not picky, else you might prepare for jobless.
Sze Hau is my University friend, 2 of us and another 3 friends totally 5 peoples went there for working holiday last year.

@traze

@traze

2009 March 15

@traze

hihi..thanks, your info really help!!will go on 8.8.2009, first destination Auckland,plan to stay at Auckland for about 2 weeks to settle bank account and IRD, then will go southern island (mostly take domestic flight to Christchurch)to experience winter, then start travel and look for job, so your info really help alot…

mm….now worry that cant find job there, because of the economic crisis and winter..heard that winter hard to find job…and also a bit scare of the cold weather there.. a bit 矛盾。。。right? :P

oh ya…for 3rd job at Van Zantan Flowerbulbs, Rakaia why work for 3 weeks only? because feel that maybe a good choice for us after we reach Christchurch…u find the job very early? sorry..actually a bit worry also, because just grad last year, and now work for no more than 1 year,dun have much capital, so have to plan well…

2009 March 17

@Ruey
Hi, I understand your feeling, really feels complicated before going there. Yeah, i also think that winter is harder to find job compare with summer. Regarding Van Zanten at Rakaia, I only work 3 weeks there because the season end, actually that flower bulbs season start around May until end of August.
For Van Zanten, we are lucky cause coincidently few workers quit their job so we able to go in there to work for 3 weeks, else i think also need to “eat grass” for that period of time. Starting Van Zanten said we only can work for 2 weeks until end of August, but end up extend another 1 week, that 3 weeks is totally consider luck, so you better do your job arrangement earlier if possible.

hihi..thanks for the wish ya…mm…i got another question, may i know do u know the price to rent a car at Southern island during winter is how much?

because if really cant get job , then will start travel 1st, so will be better if have a car..but if wanna buy car, from the info i get, Auckland will be a better place,mmdo u know how about CHC? And if buy car at the beginning before we got job , then really have to plan very well for the money, so maybe rent car will be another alternative… hehe..

2009 March 23

@Ruey
For your question, rent car during winter is cheaper than summer, but still depends on the car type. Price range you can get is around 30-70 NZD for normal car or sleeping van, based on period you rent, the longer you rent, cheaper the price. You also can get camper van with higher price.

Although Auckland is the best place to buy car, but i think Christchurch also can get a good deal. Basically for me, buy or sell car is slightly a luck deal, you even can get a super good deal in a small town if you got luck.

If you plan go there to travel around and not go there for just working in one city, then i suggest you straight buy a car instead of rent. For sure you need to plan well on your budget, maybe you can find a travel partner and share the car cost.

2009 March 23
Ruey permalink

wah…really thanks for your fast respond and help ya…you are a very good blogger, willing to help and resourceful!!thanks ya!!

Yup, will go with 2 friends, so can share the car cost, just that now still doing planning for our journey, and found that if take Air NZ from Auckland to CHC, the flight is quite cheap, only NZD59 per pax, but need to book early la..plan to buy on 1st April (yo~~April Fool, haha..:P) so if the weather in Christchurch not so cold, and it is convenient for us to do the IRD, bank account there, then we might go CHC earlier…

Hope that expenses at CHC won’t be too high, maybe will spend sometime to travel at CHC before go travel at other places…think CHC will be a good place for us to explore while waiting for IRD…

2009 March 25

@Ruey
Hi, good to hear that you depart soon. New Zealand domestic flight is quite cheap, they are quite competitive. Christchurch is quite convenient, you can do whatever you want there, is a nice place, hope you enjoy it.

i applying online now, draft.
Did you do the X-ray?How much you paid for visa?
How much u paid for flight that time?or u transit in Australia
Did u get the job online before u depart?
I search website like this link is relevant for job seeker in NZ
http://www.backpackerboard.co.nz/work_jobs/new-zealand-jobs10093.html

It may costly and lonely if travel alone?

2009 April 9

@Katie
Yeah, that really lot stories full with tear and happiness, most of it you only can experience it yourself, ha ha.
I didnt prepare the X-ray last time, regarding the visa application fees, i forgot ler, but i think around NZD 150 only, i cant recall what the exact figure ler, but just RM few hundred with currency rate NZD@RM2.5.

During that time, we went to MAS Fair and bought one way ticket from KL to Auckland @ RM 1450. We booked return ticket from NZ to AU through Jetstar.
We try to get job before go, but not successful, so quite tension after reach there, haha.

That a good site to search for job info, you can try this site too,
http://www.seasonaljobs.co.nz/

If you travel alone, you just need pay more if no people share with you, its still depend on yourself. Do have lot people find travel partner over there, i mean in backpacker, vineyard, etc. Lot of them travel together after get know of each other when working in company.

Dear Penguin,

As for the ticket dunno what happen with MAS flight. one way ticket coz RM4K…but the other day i checked RM510 on way onlu.i guess that was special promotion during that time.even during MAS fair in FEB, ticket valid to travel end of Sept.

Hi Katie,
sorry for reply late, last time I paid NZD120(i think is equivalent to RM220++, the currency is quiet low at the time i apply, NZD1 to RM1.86++ ). I got approval after wait for 1 month++, i applied at the beginning of Feb, and get the Visa on 9 March, consider fast de, anyway, i heard that got people got the visa after 1 week or less, so i think is depends on luck also.

Yup, like Penguin said, the visa is valid for 1 year,My visa valid till March 2010, just that i decided to go on Aug to experience winter there.

The air line i will take is MAS, it cost me RM1302(one way) from KL -> AKL, i think they are still having promotion, anyway, i think better get the visa before you buy the air ticket…

Hope i answer you question! by the way, do you get the email for supplementary question?

2009 April 12

@Katie
Hi, i checked back and my visa fees was NZD 120@ RM2.5, so that is RM 300 for me last time. For the MAS ticket, you need to buy it during promotion, else the ticket to NZ will very expensive.

Hi Penguin,
I was stumbled into your blog here by chance and I found it’s been qite informative, thanks. Just to seek for your advise, how do you actually start searching for a job when your were there? through local agent? hostel notice board or door-by-door visit? Also, can you shed a light on how to get a IRD number prior to my departure (from home country) and if it’s compulsory to get a travel insurance to cover the duration of our stay in NZ? As to opena bank acc, is that possible to get one without giving a permanent address? Appreciate your reply. Thanks.

2009 July 26

@Hao
No problem, hope i can help.

Search job - this very hard to say, i went there in a group, one friend got some contacts and found agent no, first job is under an agent, quite good for newbie like me cause agent will help you settle lot troubles, like accommodations, transportation, IRD etc, but sure, all comes with cost, agent deduct your pay, accommodation slightly expensive, transport need to pay etc.
After u used with the environment there, you can go through local agents, your new friends there, backpacker notice board, or websites, email them also can.

IRD - i not sure whether can apply before you are there, i think cant because need some specific info, we applied when first time working under agent, they will apply for you and send mail to your address.

Insurance - Not compulsory, is up to you, i thought before and end up didnt buy any, haha.

Bank Acct - You can open by using back packer address, I used YHA address while i opened it in Auckland .

i and my friends plan to go New Zealand after Chinese New year 2010. So we are starting to gather some information. After CNY is around Mar 2010. So the season in New Zealand should be Autumn rite? What i am worried about it we are unable to get the job there, then might not be able to stay there for long time.You had travel the whole New Zealand rite? May i know it take you how long ? May i know which area of New Zealand is most interested. Actually i am not really know about the New Zealand. Is it have 2 island like South and North island?

Appreciate for the reply.. Thanks

Yeng Ling

2009 September 8

@Yeng Ling
Yeah, march until early june consider autumn. Winter is harder to get a job if compare with summer, it is good if you can get a job before go there. I traveled lot places in New Zealand but not all, i missed some places like east/west coast of north island.

What i did is work at one place for few weeks, then move forward to next city, at the same time we go travel interesting places near by the city, so keep work, travel, reach next city, work , travel … New Zealand has 2 islands and i think south island is more interesting than north island.
